Kerferd Dam, Beechworth – Crest Filter Extension

Kerferd Dam is located on Hurdle Creek about 5 km upstream of Beechworth Township and was constructed in 1863.  The dam is the main water supply reservoir for the town. The project, for North East Water, involved the construction of 284m of new sand crest filter trench on embankment, built on top of existing sand filter trench.  Sand filters are installed to prevent leaks in embankments.

Trenching and removal of spoil was completed with minimal impact to existing embankment.  Filter sand was lowered into the open trench using a 60T crane to ensure the sand remained contaminant free.  Compaction testing and Geotechnical inspections were recorded and daily and in accordance with the technical specification.

The recreation area around Kerferd Dam was kept open to the public during this project by barricading the high-risk work zones, pedestrian traffic management and community consultation.
